About the Project

The Project is about to enter its fifth year. For successful applicants the posting will consist of three parts:

Firstly, there will be a month-long preparatory course for all selected volunteers - Norwegian and Saharawi - starting in late-July 2012: three weeks will be spent at RCNUWC, the other week will be a Fredskorpset course in Oslo. The aim of the preparatory course is to provide participants with an introduction to the project and institutions involved and to give training in the skills participants will need.

Then there will be two postings, each for three/four months. The first three volunteers will go to the camps from September 15th, 2012 and the second group of three volunteers will go to the camps from 15th January, 2013. (These dates are approximate.)

The final part of the project will happen in Norway. All six volunteers will participate in workshops and presentations in the nordic region using material they have collected in the host country.

What will participants be expected to do?

  • teach English to classes and institutions in the Saharawi refugee camps
  • support and train Saharawi teachers in the camps
  • if possible, initiate projects
  • participate in presentations about the project
  • submit reports while in the camps
  • update established web-pages for the project
  • participate in Arabic language classes
  • prepare information and present it during the follow-up when back in Norway

And what are participants expected to learn from the posting?

  • experience of teaching
  • communication skills in a foreign environment
  • personal growth - in terms of tolerance, cooperative skills, increased confidence and independence
  • a better understanding of another culture and of the humanitarian aspects of the program
  • an insight into the daily situation, and its challenges, of young people in the host country
  • experience of, and knowledge about, the challenges of international development

This new phase of the project will be funded by Fredskorpset: all expenses - travel, board and lodging, insurance etc - will be covered and a small allowance will be given to participants.
