When considering volunteering…
Think about your motivation to volunteer. Why do you want to do it?
"Good" reasons include:
- wanting to put ideals into practice
- wanting to be of service to others
- wanting to immerse yourself in a new cultural context
- wanting to learn how certain organizations (NGOs) work
"Bad" reasons include:
- wanting to have something good to put on university applications
- wanting a break from working and studying
- wanting to see a new ‘exotic’ place
- wanting a holiday
Think about:
- what you would like to get out of volunteering
- what you can bring to volunteering
- what kind of work you would like to do
Who can apply?
The Fredskorpset program is primarily designed for young Norwegians aged between 18 and 25. So if you are from Norway, and between those ages - this project is for you! It is also open to current and former Norwegian students at RCNUWC, and current and former Norwegian students of the other UWCs. Current UWC staff can also apply.
Where will we stay?
Volunteers will live with host families, thus experiencing at first hand the Saharawi culture and lifestyle. This is an opportunity to meet and learn from a people living in extreme, marginalised conditions, relatively forgotten by the international community.
Are there health concerns?
The main threat to health is dehydration from the heat. In mid-September, when the first group of volunteers will be arriving at the camps, the daytime temperatures can still be in the low-40's celsius - so protection from the sun, drinking lots of water and frequent rests will be necessary. The days will cool later in the year and the nights will become quite cold.
What support will we have?
There will be a Project Coordinator at RCNUWC who will assist with practical issues and who will be the contact person for both partners in the exchange.
What languages are spoken in the camps?
There are several languages spoken in the camps, but Arabic and Spanish are the most widely used. A familiarity with either of these languages would definitely be helpful. Some French is also spoken. Language classes will be given during the preparatory course.
